Fiction writer Shivmurti, who has most powerfully depicted the sufferings. Predicament and exportation of the rural folk , peasants, laborers, the women and the oppressed of northern India, was born on march 11, 1950 in a peasants family in village Kurang (Sultanpur Distt.) situated at an equal distance from Ayodhya and Prayag .
He graduated from Sultanpur. Attending school in his childhood was his most unpleasant experience which frequently led him to remain away from his home. Most of his early life was spent with his maternal grandmother and in aimless deviations. Due to his father’s hard physical punishment he amended himself. But, then his father himself went away from the home and became mendicant. In a very premature age of 13-14, he had to shoulder the responsibility of his family which was already passing through financial crises and life insecurity. He started earning his livelihood, got tailoring training from a tailor, prepared Bidis, sold Calendars, managed gatherings (MAZMA) to sell fake medicins for increasing sex power, he narrowly saved himself from joining the gang of a dacoit, his friend, Naresh.
For sometime he joined teaching profession and railway service. Soon after he was selected as sales tax officer by U.P. public service commission in 1975. This gave some stability to his livelihood. He retired in 2010 as Additional Commissioner.
He became acquainted with literature during his childhood when he used to hear his father reciting Ram Charitmanas, Kavitawali, Vinay Patrika. Kabeer’s couplets. But the dialogues and the sensational stories of stage-plays and nautankies which he had seen in his childhood, created his inclination towards fiction writing.
‘Vatayana’ a journal published his first short story ‘Panfool’ in 1968. the first prize awarded to him in ‘Aparh samvad’ Competition arranged by ‘Dinman’ a famous new weekly in 1976 revived his inclination towards creative writing. A collection of his short stories under the title ‘Kesar Kasturi’ was published by Radhakrishna Prakashan, Delhi in 1991. Later on Rajkamal Prakashan, Delhi published his two novels ‘Trishool’ in 1995 and ‘Tarpan’ in 2004. his third novel ‘Aakhiri Chhalang’ published in 2008 was acclaimed much.
Bangla, Punjabi, Urdu, Oriya, Kannad etc. versions of his short stories have also been published. Trishool was translated in Urdu & Punjabi while ‘Aakhiri Chhalang’ in Kannad and ‘Trapan’ in German.
Films were produced on his short stories ‘Bharatnatyam’, ‘Kasaibada’ and ‘Tiriyacharrittar’. Production of another film on ‘Tarpan’ is in process. More than thousand stage performances of ‘Kasaibada’, ‘Tiriyachattar’, ‘Bharatnatyam’ and ‘Tarpan’ were staged.
The story ‘Tiriyachattar’ was awarded first prize by literary magazine ‘Hans’ in 1988. He was honored with Anand Sagar, Smriti, ‘Kathakram’ award in 2002.
He was also honored with ‘Avadhbharti Samman’ in 2010. ‘Srijan Samman’ in 2011 and ‘Lamahi Samman’ in 2012.
Literary Magazine ‘Manch’ & ‘Lamahi’ have published their Jan-March 2010 issue and Oct-dec. 2012 issue respectively, as a special issue dedicated to the literary work of Shivmurti.
A part of Literary Magazine Naya Jnanodaya Jan. 2008 and Samawartan Sep. 2013 was dedicated to the literary work and exclusive interview of Shivmurti.
